At my wits end

Postby Teddi » Wed Oct 25, 2006 12:52 pm

I have been waiting for over a week for some word from my doctor about an appointment with a plastic surgeon to address this huge growth. I was so elated when you sent me the research, Pat and I found that others are having it done safely. Now, my doctor's office tells me that they cannot find a surgeon who will accept me. I have been racking my brain trying to figure out what to do next but I find myself weeping from despair over the fact that I am the one who is terribly uncomfortable and no one wants to help me! I can't go to another state as my ins is only good here in Iowa and I just can't live like this - no place I try to sit is comfortable no where I lie down is comfortable - I can't walk or get up by myself. And again I am so sorry to lay all of this on you guys but if I cannot find help soon, I think I just may crawl into a corner to die.

Sorry you feel so bad Teddi-I'm thinking of you I just hope you get this operation very soon somehow-something might turn up-I don't know much about things across the pond but I send my sympathies to you and hope those damn doctors give the surgery you need! I could not believe how rude that other doctor was to you.

Hey Teddi

I'm sorry too that this has turned into such a frustrating experience.

What about the University of Iowa Medical School. You would think that a teaching hospital would be interested in this. MG...isn't that what a medical school is for?????? Too learn and teach.

Last year, I had to have a biopsy on a spot on my left leg. The dermatologist didn't want to do it as he was scared of the possible complications of lymphedema. I agreed to actually sign a "hold harmless" agreement with him. It even included a paragraph where I acknowledged that I was having this done against his actual "best" advice.

It all went perfectly too (well except the path report wasn;twhat I wanted).

Don't give up my friend. :!: :!: :!: :!:

special hug your way

I appreciate the support but I don't know how much more I can take. I'm so depressed. I'm tired of being helpless and sore and leaky and on and on. I'm tired of being out of breath from lugging this thing around.
I'm also tired of getting bigger and bigger but I know that most of it is my own fault. I always used to eat right and be aware - now I'm so miserable the only pleasure I get is from a dish of sherbet or something just as bad!

By the way, univ of Iowa was the first to turn me down. And I have tried every which way to get someone there to take this on. I guess I messed myself up with the whole place when I wrote the letter of complaint about that one really nasty surgeon. Now no one there will see me! And no, they have no department or even one doctor specializing in lymphedema. I too was amazed to hear that. Today they told me their plastics dept only does cosmetic surgery - no reconstruction or reduction or anything else out of the ordinary. I've been turned down in DesMoines as well and Mason City is as good as hopeless!

I just don't know what else to do.

Hiya Teddi

I read your posting earlier have been thinking about it for hours

Since your first posting you came such a long way

found a spark in yourself decided to do battle for your self

You did fantastic to so hard to fight despair you rose to the challenge and did it hun

You know you can do it now don't let a big bump in your path stop you

you have to get over it and carry on

How about a standard letter to teaching hospitals in the usa

ok i know travelling and cost etc etc well how about finding a doctor first that is willing to do the procedure

Dont quote me on this but i have a vague recollection of someone mentioning some sort of help if the condition you have wont be treated by some docs that you can get some kind of help to go to another as i say dont quote me on this.

Try as pat suggested the teaching hospitals get out there
see if there is a doctor somewhere that can do this

find him/her then figure out how to get to them and cost but you got to find a name that will do it first

if its a specialised op not available in your insurance cover area surely they have to take into account where you can get this help when its
not available in there bounderies

Teddi keep battling hun theres an answer out there

letd find a doctor first get finding those names and addresses get writing

huggggggggggggg

Teddi is now in the hospital

Postby junequilt » Wed Nov 01, 2006 1:28 pm

Hello, I'm Teddi's best friend. I joined this Forum because she's told me how supportive you've been of her, and I wanted to let you know that after being sick for the better part of a week and continuing to spiral downhill, she was finally taken to the hospital yesterday. The initial diagnosis was blood poisoning, but now evidently they're saying that it's cellulitis. Whatever it is, she's feeling awful and is in a great deal of pain.

I know I'm new to the Forum, but can I please vent a bit? I'm so tired of doctors and nurses dismissing Teddi because of her size and the fact that what she has isn't pretty. We're talking medical professionals here, and they take one look at her and think "fat," along with all the negative connotations -- including distaste -- that come along with that evaluation. They think all she needs is to go on a diet, and that's where it ends for them. It doesn't matter to them that there's a vital and very wonderful human being under all those layers. It really torques me but there's not much I can do about it from 1,000 miles away.

Okay, I've vented. Thanks. If you have any messages that you'd like Teddi to receive, post them and I'll read them to her over the phone.
